Inavimed 2025 — The Indonesian Ministry of Health has announced major strides in the implementation of healthcare-grade artificial intelligence (AI) and digital clinical trial models aimed at improving chronic disease care and expanding access to clinical research across the country.
The initiative, part of Indonesia's broader digital health transformation roadmap, includes strategic partnerships with international health tech companies, deployment of AI-enabled tools in hospitals, and the launch of decentralized clinical trial (DCT) pilot programs.
AI in Action: Partnerships with Harrison AI and Kakao Healthcare
In early 2025, the Ministry signed a collaboration with Harrison AI, an Australia-based med-tech firm, to integrate AI diagnostic tools in three key national hospitals: RSPON Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (Jakarta), Dharmais National Cancer Hospital, and Dr. M. Djamil Hospital (Padang). These hospitals are now piloting AI-powered radiology and pathology systems to support clinical decision-making and data-driven research.
Simultaneously, the Ministry is collaborating with Kakao Healthcare to test a mobile diabetes management platform called Pasta. The app is being trialed at the University of Indonesia Hospital (RSUI) and integrates with continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) and AI-based lifestyle tracking features to improve chronic disease management.
“With AI and mobile health platforms, we aim to decentralize participation in clinical trials and make them accessible to populations outside urban centers,” said a Ministry spokesperson.
Clinical Research Centre (CRC) to Support AI-Enabled Trials
To standardize and scale these efforts, Indonesia has launched a national Clinical Research Centre (CRC). This new initiative is backed by a network of more than 3,000 hospitals and research institutions, enabling decentralized and AI-integrated trials for diseases like hypertension, diabetes, tuberculosis, and cancer.
The CRC initiative is expected to improve Indonesia’s capacity to host international trials, reduce costs, and enhance the diversity of study populations by reaching remote and underserved communities.
Healthcare Institutions Embrace Generative AI
According to the Philips Future Health Index 2024, 74% of healthcare leaders in Indonesia reported plans to adopt generative AI in their clinical and research operations—far exceeding the global average of 56%. The data underscores Indonesia's growing reputation as a forward-looking hub for digital health innovation.
Data Integration via Satu Sehat Platform
The success of Indonesia’s digital health strategy also relies on the integration of patient data across providers. The government’s Satu Sehat (One Health) platform, which links health records from thousands of public and private facilities, plays a central role in supporting these digital trial models while ensuring patient privacy and regulatory compliance.
Looking Ahead
With AI tools now operating in clinical environments and remote monitoring systems gaining traction, Indonesia’s health system is laying the groundwork for larger-scale nationwide decentralized trials—especially for non-communicable diseases.
Experts believe that Indonesia’s model could serve as a blueprint for other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) seeking to modernize health research without building costly physical infrastructure.
